    Description

On the banks of Lake Kampeska, Sandy Shore Recreation Area offers just that ... a long, sandy beach. The beach is a great place to enjoy Lake Kampeska, which is a glacial lake named for its clear water. Early homesteaders settled along the shores of the lake.

Campers eager to follow in the footsteps of those early settlers can easily book a site using the online system. Both RVers and tent campers will find spaces that meet their needs. Back-in sites at the campground come with electricity and partial shade. The facilities at Sandy Shore Recreation Area are designed to make the outdoor experience more pleasant: boat ramp, flush toilets and showers, picnic shelter, playground and game checkout.

Fishermen seeking the catch-of-the-day will find walleye, northern pike, perch and bass in the waters of Lake Kampeska. You can check out a pole, if you didn't have room to pack your own or decided at the last minute that the fishing was just too good to pass up. Sandy Shore Recreation Area is five miles west of Watertown. In the town, interesting places to visit include the Terry Redlin Art Center, the Bramble Park Zoo, the Mellette House, home of South Dakota's first governor, and the Codington County Historical Museum.

    Plain

Nice place. Way over priced for mid April with no services available. Looks like a great place in summer...nice beach and boat ramp.

    Beautiful lakeside view

I really enjoyed camping for a night at Sandy Shore. Saw a beautiful sunset reflected in the lake, and enjoyed the night view with the little gleaming lights scattered along the edge of the lake. The sound of the water was relaxing, but the wind coming from the lake direction was quite strong that night, making it a little harder to sleep. Early morning was very cold (as is to be expected in April), but it was nice hearing the seagulls (lake-gulls? :)) and watching them flying to and fro in the morning. I loved that there were hardly any other campers there that day, as it made it very peaceful, but yet not lonely, as we could still hear plenty of cars passing by on the nearby road. The vault toilet was clean and didn’t smell, so that was good. Overall, I enjoyed my short stay there very much.

    Weekend stay

We recently stayed at Sandy Shores for a long weekend. We enjoyed our stay in spite of cold wind. Very relaxing by the lake with beautiful views. We camped in our motorhome. Sites are plenty long and not packed together. Will return again.

    Nice Campground

Sandy Shores was a favorite spot for me when I was young. We recently moved back to Watertown and needed a place to stay while moving household items into our home. Sandy Shore was conveniently located to the house. I only wish the bathrooms and showers were open. They are not available until 4/30. Unfortunately, the water also was unavailable.
