Water-lovers enjoy fishing, boating, or just watching the waves at Cow Creek Recreation Area. Both primitive shoreline camping and campground camping are available. The shoreline sites offer outstanding views of Oahe Reservoir while providing a great deal of privacy. Campsites in the campground have easy access to drinking water and restrooms/showers and can be booked in advance. Two camping cabins are also available. Making a reservation is a quick process, using the online system.

Camping cabins at Cow Creek Recreation Area accommodate four people in the one-room space with a set of bunk beds, double bed, table and benches. Heating, air conditioning and electricity provide for year-round comfort. Cabins do not have restrooms, running water or kitchens. A porch, picnic table and fire grate allow for pleasant outdoor dining while enjoying the scenic surroundings. Park amenities include a boat ramp and picnic shelter. Anglers landing walleye, sauger, northern pike, channel catfish, trout and bass can prepare their catch in the fish-cleaning station.

Lake Oahe Reservoir, located on the Missouri River, provides hours of outdoor fun. The lake has more than 2,000 miles of shoreline and its clear waters are ideal for boating, sailing, fishing, water skiing and diving. Campers, history buffs, mountain bikers and hikers will find new adventures in this rugged land first explored by Lewis and Clark. For trips outside the park, Pierre is the closest city. The state's Capitol is open every day to view the murals, stained glass and artwork. Other points of interest: Oahe Dam Visitor Center, South Dakota Discovery Center, the Lewis and Clark Family Center and the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center.

    First experience at Cow Creek

When I first got here the ranger station provided excellent service her name is Sharon she steered me in the right direction when I got to the site it was great it was semi private and you could fish all the way around the shore of the peninsula. Although the fish did not cooperate all that well I did catch three small small mouth bass. Then I decided to move to Okobojo Area and found another wonderful site. The facilities at this area Has hot water in the shower. Overall it was a great first experience

    Cow Creek just so so

We have been lucky enough to camp at numerous state parks along the Missouri (North Point, Snake Creek, Buryaneks, Cheif White Crane, Lewis and Clark, Indian Creek) and Cow Creek is just so so. Bad to no grass, no breeze in the park as there are no breaks in the shelter belt the sites sits in between. Beautiful spots on the finger points that would be reserved every weekend if they would as electricity. Fishing would be the only reason to stay here and even with that there are better spots to fish on the river that have beautiful Stats Park. Vern the host here is very crabby and territorial, not welcoming and engaging. Definitely a park that could improve upon itself with a little work.

    Management Response

Thank you for your comments. Cow Creek is a developing park that is increasing in popularity. Each SD State Park has their own unique features, and fishing is definitely the big draw to Cow Creek. Many fishing tournaments are held at Cow Creek, and many anglers utilize the campground. Vern, our Campground Host, is very devoted and has over 10,000 volunteer hours in SD State Parks. I will ask him about your interaction with him and see where improvements can be made. -- Erik E.
