With its more than 140 campsites and 10 camping cabins, Chief White Crane Recreation Area is a great place for groups to gather to spend the weekend. Combined with its own facilities and the features of the other two state parks nearby, Lewis & Clark and Pierson Ranch, visitors can take advantage of a wide variety of recreation opportunities.

Snug one-room cabins sleep four in a set of bunk beds and a double bed. Stay in comfort in a picturesque setting with heating, air conditioning and electricity. Dine outdoors using the picnic table and fire grate. Don't forget to bring bedding, cooking utensils and a cooler for food storage. Campers may choose from non-electrical and electrical sites, and for a few dollars more, upgrade to a waterfront site. Reservations may be made quickly and securely with the online system. Once at Chief White Crane Recreation Area, enjoy the park's amenities: picnic shelter, playground, comfort station with showers and flush toilets and game checkout.

Chief White Crane Recreation Area is one of the South Dakota state parks that offers the opportunity for visitors to see the majestic bald eagle. In South Dakota, many bald eagles spend their winters below the Missouri River dams where they are able to catch fish and prey on waterfowl attracted to the open water. They typically perch within 50 feet of the riverbank in tall cottonwood trees. The birds usually feed in the morning and rest in their roosting trees in the afternoon.

    Nice Campground

The sites are nice and roomy. Level and paved - which is great. Lake view sites are the best. Firepits are fine and I was able to cook on the grate easily (which is what we typically do). Our complaint is the lack of water - which seems to be common with SD State parks. We are used to our county and state parks always having water and electric at our site. For the price, we expect water readily available. We completely missed the area when pulling off the highway to fill our water tanks, so we were driving around the campground trying to find a hydrant---they are few and far between and not marked very well. We like Yankton-- Dairy Dock is always great. Fishing and boating is good - however gets really busy on the week-ends so we try to go during the week (and it's still busy). Nice sand beach near this campground (again, gets busy).

    Our Favorite Campground

Chief White Crane continues to be our family's favorite camping destination. It has beautiful mature trees, spacious camp spots, proximity to fishing and swimming, and our kids love the variety of playgrounds. We enjoy the walking/biking trails and the camp host/hostess are always so helpful and kind. Our first camping experience at Chief White crane with friends is the whole reason we purchased our first family travel trailer!

Stated with family in 2 campsites and 1 cabin. Sites are large with long level pads that are paved. Plenty of room for tow vehicle. Fire rings are large and have a cooking grate.Cabin was clean without an odor. Bathroom shower house was clean and water was hot. Campground personnel were seen several times per day driving through the park and checking out the bathroons. Nice view of the lake from cabin deck. Large aluminum picnic tables. We love coming to this campground!
