Angostura Reservoir in the Angostura Recreation Area is a water-lover's haven with breathtaking scenic views. Offering crystal clear waters, 36 miles of shoreline, and some of the finest sandy beaches in the state, the area boasts many water sports and summer fun activities - camping, boating, fishing, and swimming. Make plans to stay at one the campgrounds, at a campsite or cabin, by using the online reservation system. Each campsite at Angostura Recreation Area has a gravel or paved camping pad, a fire grate and picnic table, and flush toilets and showers are installed. Electric hookups are available at the majority of the campsites. One-room, log-style cabins are found in all four Angostura campgrounds and overlook the reservoir. Each cabin has heating, air conditioning, electricity and a porch. Furnishings include a bunk bed, a double bed, table and benches.

Look for walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, northern pike, largemouth bass, perch and bluegill in Angostura, one of the few large reservoirs in western South Dakota. To help you manage your catch, there is a fishing dock, boat ramp, fish cleaning station and fishing pole checkout. Rent a canoe or kayak to glide along the lake and take in the sights. Among the other amenities at Angostura Recreations Area are a marina, picnic shelter, playground and visitor center.

Angostura Recreation Area hosts an array of interpretive and educational activities during the summer season. Each program is geared for families with young children and will expose participants to the various natural and cultural features of the Southern Black Hills. A geocache scavenger hunt takes place every year. The hunt begins on April 1 and ends on October 31. Participants who successfully answer the treasure hunt questions are entered into a drawing for a variety of prizes.

    Comes up short

Camped in October. Great spot near the lake. Few other campers. Best thing going for it was the electricity. The “comfort station was anything but. It was cold in there and the shower water took forever to get warm. Shower head stung it sprayed so hard. Station only got serviced once in 6 days. We will return someday but when you pay full price for off season camping everything should be in good working order. Our experience could have been better if the comfort station had been comfortable. Fishing was lousy but that’s fishing. Still beat the weather with one last camp out.

    Fun in the sun

Angostura SRA is a huge recreation area on the east side of the reservoir. There are four campgrounds on this side, and Sheps Canyon SRA on the west side has another campground and an equestrian campground. We stayed nine nights in Cascade campground, which had large spaces and lots of grass and trees. The bathrooms were clean, and the one near us had individual shower rooms. There are some ranger-led programs that would be worth attending. Campsites are electric-only, with water spigots scattered around for jug-filling. There are two dump stations located on the Angostura side of the lake. There's a paved bike path that runs along most of this shore between the campgrounds. Huge lake, lots of boats that create waves (challenging for paddling), and very windy. Very nice, well-kept park, we would return in a heartbeat.
