Located on the shores of the Missouri River just above Fort Randall Dam, North Point Recreation Area provides a spectacular river view. Lewis and Clark came up the river in late-August, early-September in 1804. In this area, they saw their first prairie dogs, which they called "barking squirrels." They were also told to watch for an infrequent phenomenon called "burning bluffs," where the shale ignites and smokes.

Modern-day visitors can follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark and explore the area. If you'd like to stay overnight at North Point Recreation Area, the first step is reserve a campsite or camping cabin. The online reservation system is fast and easy-to-use. All campsites have electric hookups, with access to a dump station and restrooms equipped with flush toilets and showers. Cabins, open year-round, have a set of bunk beds and a double bed to accommodate four people. Sleep comfortably with air-conditioning and heating. Although cooking is not allowed indoors, a picnic table and fire grate give you outdoor options.

From the beach, cool off in the water, or see if the fish--walleye, northern pike, bass, crappie and catfish--are biting. Bike or hike on the North Point trail. It's rated easy, with a few moderate grades. Checkout a game for fun and bring a picnic. You'll find a floating fuel dock and convenience store at The Fort Randall Marina onsite at North Point Recreation Area.

Loved the campground, clean, spacious lot, super facilities. I loved all the walking paths around the entire campground. Well maintained. Definately the #1 site on our list. The only downfall was someone stole all of our adult beverages out of our cooler outside, which was our fault we didn't lock it up.

    Fun and Safe Get-Away

We had the best time recently staying at a SD North Point camping cabin. The facilities were clean and the view was amazing. Thanks so much to the staff for their great communication and for being so accommodating!

not for out of state fisherman

Love the campground. Love the clean water and the fishing is generally good. I will not be going back however. South Dakota is robbing out of state fisherman now. 96 dollars for a non-resident fishing license is just too much for me. I'm guessing many others will feel the same way. I won't be going back to South Dakota again.
