    Description

Known for its clear waters and abundant fish, Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is a popular place among fishermen, boaters and swimmers. During the fall, sportsmen can find waterfowl and upland game within minutes from the park. This 512-acre reservoir is located 27 miles west of Sioux Falls.

Three campgrounds with both electrical and non-electrical sites and camping cabins provide plenty of space for overnight visitors. Whether you bring an RV, a tent or prefer the comfort of the indoors, making a reservation is quick and easy. A little time at the computer using the online system and you're good to go. You can hit the beach, rent a canoe or kayak or unpack your fishing gear to haul in a catch of walleye, northern pike, crappie or blue gill. If you choose to stay in a cabin at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, they are available year-round. Each sleeps four people and is furnished with a set of bunk beds, double bed, table, benches and heating/air conditioning.

Lake Vermillion was created by impounding waters from the east fork of the Vermillion River in 1958. The river itself was first noted on an 1801 map by a French trapper who called it Otter Stream. The word vermillion means vivid red color. Some say the stream got its name from the outcropping of red quartzite along its bank. Along with red, you'll find three other R's at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area: rest, relaxation and recreation.

    Disappointing

The campers next to us had 3 vehicles, one on our site and 4 dogs, one a pit bull. They set their table and chairs on our site under the shade tree which we would of been happy to share with them but they didn’t more over on their site. They had over the limit company that stayed over and were loud way over the 11 pm quiet hour. When they left they didn’t clean up, leaving garbage and dog poop on our site and theirs. When the host came after they left, her comment was we get people like this, hello so you continue to allow it? Beautiful park but disappointing.

    Great Lake View.. But TICKS

We enjoy this campground and several spots have excellent lake views. They are fairly roomy, maybe a little close to each other. There is a nice grassy area and good playground. However, if you camp by the pine trees, you will be overcome with ticks. They are EVERYWHERE! Recommend bringing yard guard if the campground won't take care of them.

    happy (ish) camper

We love lake vermilion. We’ve camped here several times and it’s always been great. For the most part this weekend was no exception. This visit however was different because if one thing, The campground host. We stayed in the west campground and it almost felt like we were being harassed. It started when our daughter and my sisters daughter arrived ( we were camping side by side). Our daughter both arrived first in their own cars and parked on the pads we reserved waiting for our arrival. The host told them they couldn’t wait on OUR pads. We had a couple visitors that did park on the road for a short time. We were unloading stuff from the boat then they left to park elsewhere, later when they decided to leave they brought their vehicle/boat back around to load up coolers and whatnot the host followed them to our campsite. The kicker though was when they told the kids they couldn’t skip rocks on the lake. They are just kids skipping a few rocks. Nobody was fishing so they weren’t disturbing anyone. We’ll come back but probably won’t ever stay at the west loop again
