    Description

Buryanek Recreation Area is popular with boaters and anglers, as well those looking for scenic beauty along the Missouri River. History buffs will enjoy knowing that the Lewis and Clark expedition traveled through the area, where they were told to watch for "burning bluffs" along the river. Modern-day travelers can book campsites and cabins online using the handy online system. The system is fast, easy-to-use and available 24 hours a day. Both the park and the cabins are open year-round to take advantage of the changing seasons.

The three cozy cabins have contemporary touches, like heating, air conditioning and electricity. A family can sleep comfortably, then dine outdoors using the fire grate and picnic table. Make sure to pack cooking utensils, sleeping bags and linens and a container for water. Amenities of Buryanek Recreation Area include a boat ramp, beach, dump station, fish cleaning station, playground and picnic shelter. Bring your fishing gear to lure walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, sauger, pan fish and channel catfish.

The Lewis and Clark expedition has forever left its mark on this area with the story of Private George Shannon. Shannon, the youngest member of the expedition at 19 years old, became lost when he was sent to fetch strayed horses. Thinking the crew had moved up river, Shannon raced to meet the boats. When he was found exhausted and starving two weeks later, he quickly learned that the expedition had been downstream from him the entire time.

Rough access road, very nice park

The campground is very nice, clean, and quiet. Boat launch and parking was good. Fish cleaning station was also convenient and clean. The only concern is the road leading from Highway 44 to the camp site. It is three miles of "mud" road, very steep and curvy. It was dry when we arrived, but there were signs that vehicles had a difficult time after a weekend rain. We left one day early because we were concerned that the forecast rain would leave us stranded there because our motorhome towing a large boat would not have the traction to climb the steep hills. Access road improvement with some gravel, ditches for water run off, and frequent grading would improve this situation and make the park more accessible.

    Dangerous Pathway

I have informed you on previous occasions about the hazardous path to get to the river from the cabin we rented. The regular path is gone. I have asked that huge fallen trees be removed, and a new short path be installed, but, even though I have notified you a couple of occasions in the past couple of years, nothing - repeat nothing, has been done. Why do you continue to to put campers in danger, when some minor improvements will make a huge difference for campers to access the river?? Remove dead fallen trees, use a bobcat to bulldoze a safe, reliable path to the river. What is there now is very dangerous. Some one is going to get hurt trying to get to the river.

    too expensive

Overall this is a really good recreation area. But, being in the off season we were really dissappointed in the price. Most places also offer a military discount and this place did not. We didn't need any water or electricity and were just camping in a tent we thought the price was a little high.

    Great view

Beautiful view of the Missouri River. Very nice campground. Cabin was nice, clean with the exception of some dead flies in the corners and edges of the walls.
