OVERVIEW

Description

Rocky Point Recreation Area is located on the 8,000-acre Belle Fourche Reservoir. The reservoir was created in 1911, when Orman Dam was constructed to store water for agricultural use. At the time of its completion, Orman Dam was the largest earthen dam in the world. In 1989, Orman Dam was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

Glide along the water in a kayak or canoe, fish and take a boat out on the water when you camp overnight. Rocky Point Recreation Area offers sites with or without electricity and cozy one-bedroom cabins in scenic locations. Book your reservation quickly and easily using the online system. Cabins are built for four people and furnished with a double bed, set of bunk beds, heating, air conditioning and electricity. Cooking is not permitted inside, but an outdoor fire grate and picnic table are provided.

Fishing is a popular activity at Rocky Point Recreation Area, and a boat ramp, fish-cleaning station and fishing pole checkout are provided. Species found in the reservoir are walleye, yellow perch, channel catfish, black crappie, smallmouth bass, white bass and tigermuskie. A canoe or kayak can be rented and games borrowed for use at the park. If you're in the mood for a good hike, visit the George S. Mickelson Trail, in the heart of the beautiful Black Hills. Its gentle slopes and easy access allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the beauty of the area.

Need More Campsites

Need more Campsites... The campground deserves great reviews, except for one thing...there needs to be more sites!! You go online to reserve a site and they are all reserved for as far as you can go on their calendar!! We live in the northern Black Hills and have been going to Orman camping for decades, and love the campsites with elec, etc. But now we don't go as often because we need the electric hook-up sites for our C-Paps & wife's oxygen, & would visit more often if there were more of these campsites available. We hear this complaint all of the time from everyone we talk to about this problem. Please, please more campsites...there is plenty of room for expansion, and over time the additional site fees would more than pay for the expenses to do this. P.S. The lady at the gate is so friendly and helpful!! (I think her name is LeeAnn-?)

Camping Experience

We are from Wisconsin and we are going to encourage our state park's people to visit this park! This is an example of what a fine campground should be. It is very inviting, with very large spaces, and very well maintained. Not that our parks aren't well maintained, but they make no effort to make the spaces larger for the newer rigs, which are bigger than 35 feet these days. We would definitely stay here again, if we get back here and will recommend it to anyone we know coming this way. Thank you for a wonderful stay! The gal in the booth was very friendly and helpful.
