OVERVIEW

Description

Known for its clear waters and abundant fish, Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is a popular place among fishermen, boaters and swimmers. During the fall, sportsmen can find waterfowl and upland game within minutes from the park. This 512-acre reservoir is located 27 miles west of Sioux Falls.

Three campgrounds with both electrical and non-electrical sites and camping cabins provide plenty of space for overnight visitors. Whether you bring an RV, a tent or prefer the comfort of the indoors, making a reservation is quick and easy. A little time at the computer using the online system and you're good to go. You can hit the beach, rent a canoe or kayak or unpack your fishing gear to haul in a catch of walleye, northern pike, crappie or blue gill. If you choose to stay in a cabin at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, they are available year-round. Each sleeps four people and is furnished with a set of bunk beds, double bed, table, benches and heating/air conditioning.

Lake Vermillion was created by impounding waters from the east fork of the Vermillion River in 1958. The river itself was first noted on an 1801 map by a French trapper who called it Otter Stream. The word vermillion means vivid red color. Some say the stream got its name from the outcropping of red quartzite along its bank. Along with red, you'll find three other R's at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area: rest, relaxation and recreation.

Late season camping

This is our 2nd annual late season visit to Lake Vermillion camping cabins and we are in Love! We are not good plan-ahead type of people so the late season works great for us as there isn't a problem with availability. We love the cabins-everything we need for a great camping experience. Waking up Saturday morning, making coffee in the 17 degrees watching the steam coming off the lake was breathtaking. Our afternoon spent on the walking trails was comfortable, beautiful and informative. Highly recommended!

off-season bliss

A perfect respite campsite not far from I90. Long spacious campsites, good privacy yet only about a half hour from Sioux Falls conveniences.

Fall Colors

I must have been at the park during the peak leaf season. It was quite spectacular with reflections in the water. Not to many reds, but a lot of shades of yellow. The weather was perfect for tent camping. All i could say about the stars at 2am was WOW!

Beautiful

This was our first visit to Lake Vermillion. We booked a fall camping "end of the season" weekend. Arrived Friday night after dark and found sites paved (Very nice!) . Lots of open sites this time of year. Saturday brought cold and rainy weather, but didn't bother us in the least. We ventured out a few times through out the day and enjoyed the beautiful colors of fall and the peacefulness of Lake Vermillion. Used the bath house, which was nice, warm and very clean and the shower itself had great pressure and hot water (unlike a few other state parks we have visited). DEFINATELY will be back again.
